AI Overviews are eating your clicks — rebuilding SEO for the answer engine era
Google's AI Overviews and ChatGPT Search flattened top-of-funnel traffic. Here's the new playbook: entity SEO, structured data, and content that survives generative summarization.

Ranking first no longer guarantees a click. When an AI Overview answers the question above your listing, informational queries lose most of their traffic value overnight. The instinct is to write more articles. The correct response is to write differently.
Optimise for citation, not position
Generative engines quote sources that state facts cleanly and attributably. Short declarative sentences, explicit numbers, named entities, and clear dates get pulled into answers. Long meandering intros do not. Put the answer in the first two sentences of each section and let the depth follow.
Entities beat keywords
Search engines now model your site as a set of entities — a person, a service, a place, a set of projects. Consistent naming across your site, your schema markup, and your external profiles is what makes that model resolve to you. An Organization or Person JSON-LD block plus consistent NAP details does more than another keyword variant page.
Structured data is table stakes
Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and Person schema all increase the chance of being parsed correctly. They cost minutes to add and they are one of the few remaining technical levers with a direct, measurable effect.
Move budget down the funnel
Top-of-funnel informational content still builds authority, but the revenue now sits in comparison, pricing, alternative and location pages — queries where the user needs to see options rather than an answer. Rebalance accordingly.
