Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your brand the source an AI answer engine quotes. Traditional SEO competes for a position in a list of ten blue links. GEO competes for a sentence inside a synthesized answer — in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews. The two disciplines share infrastructure and diverge sharply on tactics.

This guide is the full playbook: what changes, what to build, how to measure it, and what to ignore.

GEO vs SEO: the actual differences

SEO optimises a page for a query. GEO optimises a set of facts for retrieval and citation. In SEO the unit of value is a ranking URL; in GEO it is a quotable passage plus a resolvable entity. SEO success is a click. GEO success is often a mention with no click at all — the user sees your brand named as the authority, then searches for you directly later.

SEO rewards keyword coverage and internal linking. GEO rewards factual density, clean attribution, corroboration across independent sources, and freshness signals the model can date. A page can rank third and be cited in every AI answer, or rank first and be invisible to the same models. They are correlated, not identical.

The overlap matters too: an AI engine cannot cite a page it cannot crawl, parse, or trust. Every technical SEO fundamental — crawlability, fast rendering, semantic HTML, structured data, internal links — remains a prerequisite. GEO is additive, not a replacement.

How answer engines actually choose sources

Most consumer answer engines run a retrieval step before generation. A query is expanded into several sub-queries, a search index (Bing, Google, or a proprietary crawl) returns candidate documents, a reranker scores passages, and the model composes an answer from the top passages while attaching citations.

That pipeline has four gates, and GEO is the discipline of passing all four. Gate one: be crawled and indexed by the underlying search index. Gate two: be retrieved for the sub-query, which depends on passage-level semantic match, not page-level keyword match. Gate three: survive reranking, which favours specific, self-contained, recent, well-attributed passages. Gate four: be chosen for citation, which favours sources the model treats as authoritative — corroborated by other sites, with a clear author and organisation behind them.

The content structure that gets quoted

Write passages that stand alone. A model retrieves a chunk of a few hundred words without the surrounding page, so each section must make sense in isolation. Repeat the subject noun instead of relying on "it" and "this", and never open a section with a pronoun referring back to a previous heading.

Lead with the answer. State the conclusion in the first one or two sentences of a section, then justify it. Buried conclusions get skipped by rerankers and by readers.

Be concrete and specific. Numbers, dates, named tools, prices, percentages and version numbers are what makes a passage quotable. "Improves conversion significantly" is unciteable; "cut trial signup fields from nine to four and completion rose 23% over six weeks" is exactly the kind of sentence an answer engine lifts.

Use question-shaped headings. "What does generative engine optimization cost?" maps directly onto a sub-query. "Investment considerations" maps onto nothing.

Answer the comparison and definitional queries explicitly. "GEO vs SEO", "is GEO worth it", "GEO tools", "how to measure GEO" — each deserves its own section with its own heading, because each is a separate retrieval target.

Add original data. The single strongest citation magnet is a fact that exists nowhere else: your own benchmark, survey, teardown, or pricing analysis. Models preferentially cite the origin of a statistic, and other sites link to it, which reinforces gate four.

Technical foundations for GEO

Allow the AI crawlers you want citations from. GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and CCBot are separate user agents from Googlebot, and blocking them in robots.txt removes you from those engines entirely. Decide deliberately: blocking training crawlers while allowing search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot) is a reasonable middle position.

Serve real HTML. Client-side-rendered content that only appears after JavaScript execution is unreliable for third-party AI crawlers, most of which do not run a full browser. Server-render your content.

Ship structured data. Article, FAQPage, HowTo, Organization, Person, Product and BreadcrumbList schema give parsers unambiguous facts. FAQPage is disproportionately useful because it pairs a question with a short answer in machine-readable form.

Publish and maintain visible dates. Answer engines weight freshness heavily on any topic that changes. Show a published date and a last-updated date, and make the update real.

Keep entity details identical everywhere. Your name, role, organisation, location and links should match across your site, your schema markup, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, GitHub and any directory you appear in. Entity resolution is how a model decides two mentions refer to the same thing.

Consider an llms.txt file at your domain root summarising what your site covers and linking to the canonical pages for each topic. Adoption is early and support is not guaranteed, but the cost is one file.

Off-site GEO: the part most people skip

Answer engines synthesize from multiple sources, and a claim corroborated across independent sites is far likelier to survive into the final answer than one that appears only on your own domain. That makes third-party presence a GEO tactic, not just a PR one.

The highest-leverage placements are the ones models retrieve constantly: Reddit and niche community threads, Wikipedia and Wikidata where you genuinely qualify, industry listicles and "best X for Y" roundups, review platforms like G2 and Capterra, and podcast or interview transcripts. Being named in a "top 10 freelance digital marketers in India" article is often worth more in GEO terms than another blog post on your own site.

Digital PR that places a statistic from your original research into trade publications compounds: the statistic gets attributed to you across many domains, and every one of them becomes a retrievable corroboration.

Measuring GEO

You cannot manage this with rank tracking alone. Build a prompt set — 30 to 50 real questions your buyers ask — and check monthly whether you are cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Overviews. Record citation rate (share of prompts where you appear), share of voice against named competitors, and sentiment of the mention.

In your analytics, segment referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Volumes are small but the conversion rate is typically well above organic search, because the user arrives pre-qualified by the answer.

Watch branded search volume. The most common GEO outcome is a zero-click mention that produces a branded search days later. If AI citations rise and branded impressions in Search Console rise with them, GEO is working even when referral traffic looks flat.

Server logs close the loop: crawl frequency from GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot tells you whether gate one is passed at all.

A 90-day implementation plan

Days 1–30, foundations. Audit robots.txt for AI crawler access, confirm server-side rendering, add Article and FAQPage schema to your top 20 pages, standardise entity details across every profile you control, and build your prompt-tracking spreadsheet with a first baseline reading.

Days 31–60, content. Rewrite your ten highest-intent pages into answer-first structure with question headings and self-contained sections. Publish one original-data asset — a benchmark, survey or teardown with numbers nobody else has. Add an FAQ block to every commercial page.

Days 61–90, authority. Pitch the original data to three trade publications, get listed in the roundups and directories your category uses, answer real questions in the communities your buyers read, and re-measure the prompt set against the baseline.

What to ignore

Ignore anyone selling guaranteed AI citations — there is no submission endpoint and no paid placement in organic AI answers. Ignore keyword-stuffing adapted for prompts; rerankers score semantic relevance, not term frequency. Ignore mass-generated AI content, which is the single fastest way to lose the trust signals gate four depends on. And ignore the claim that SEO is dead: the retrieval layer under every answer engine is still a search index.

The short version

GEO is SEO with a different unit of value. Optimise passages instead of pages, facts instead of keywords, and citations instead of clicks — on top of technical foundations that have not changed. Brands that publish specific, dated, well-attributed, corroborated content will be the ones AI engines name when a buyer asks who to hire.
